ST IVES SHOWGROUND,
Machines and Macchiato Charity Show

On 24 November 2019, the VSCCA attended the St Ives Showground of the Machines and Macchiato Triple Shot Show.   Apart from a very nice 1908 Humber, and a 20/60 Sunbeam Saloon and the VSCCA entrants, the majority of cars were from the fifties through to the current date.  Many of these were impressive, rare or interesting cars – Ford GT 40 replica, Aston Martin DB4, Fiat 500 station wagon, Volkswagen Beetle drop head, McLaren, Ford GT HO, E-type Jaguars and Ferraris.

The VSCCA display was down on entrants.  Steve Morley could not seem to get a car there, having had engine block failure in his Fiat 501 only to be followed by a borrowed Austin 12 suffering magneto failure.  But he got there in his Jeep with son Jack.  Richard Andreoni took ill and did not attend and others dropped out due to other commitments.  Still, we had a good turnout from members and it was an enjoyable day catching up with friends.  So far as we were concerned the car of the day was the Delahaye Curtiss of Paul Armstrong which not only looked good but the 9.3 litre Curtiss aero engine in operation was just fantastic.  Photos alone do not do it justice.  The car is a great credit to him.

Others who attended included:

(a)          Todd Barker – Frazer Nash

(b)          Jeremy Morris – GN Sports

(c)           Jock Granger – E-type Jaguar 4.2

(d)         Rees Mackay – Sunbeam 20/60

(e)          Noel McIntosh – Riley 12/4

Those members without “proper” cars included Mark Copping, Cliff King and Sean Sherry.  I apologise if I have missed others.

Friends of the VSCCA included Bill McIntosh, Arthur Babbington, Bruce and Marion Mansell and Percy and Maureen Hunter.  Maureen was chatting to a number of us under the Club gazebo with Percy and she told a story of seeking out Percy at the nearby Hare & Forbes Machinery Warehouse promotional  stand at which they were displaying their products.  She could not find him there and said to a salesman, “My husband has spent enough of my money at your store” to which Paul immediately quipped, “No, I haven’t!”.

It was an enjoyable day and our car display attracted a lot of general enthusiasts as well as people with long or past interest in historic racing or had a connection with the VSCCA.

Thanks to Jock Granger for suggesting the event and Rees Mackay for coordinating it.
